Event Details

Sargent and Fashion is an exploration of the art of John Singer Sargent (1864-1925) the greatest portraitist of the gilded age, and his relationship to fashion.

The exhibition Fashioned by Sargent explored the relationship of painting and dress through Sargent’s works seen alongside exquisite costumes of the period―including garments actually worn by his sitters. Sargent was best known for his dramatic, stylish portraits sought out by the rich and famous on both sides of the Atlantic.

Sargent was equally accomplished as a landscapist, muralist and watercolorist. 2025 will mark the 100th year since the artist's death. Join Professor Thomas Germano for this visual lecture looking at the recent exhibition, Fashioned by Sargent held at the MFA, Boston (2023-24,) and Tate Gallery, London (2024.) This lecture will be a wonderful preview to the upcoming April 2025 exhibit Sargent & Paris at the Metropolitan Museum.
