Join Kate Beaton, the NYT bestselling author of Hark! A Vagrant!, as she discusses her new graphic narrative Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands. The memoir depicts an untold story of Canada: a country that prides itself on its egalitarian ethos and natural beauty while simultaneously exploiting both the land and its people.

After university, Beaton parts from her beloved community in Cape Breton and heads west to take advantage of employment in Alberta’s oil rush. With the singular goal of paying off her student loans, what the journey will actually cost Beaton will be far more than she anticipates. Beaton encounters the harsh reality of life in the oil sands where trauma is an everyday occurrence, yet never discussed, and wounds may never heal.
