Event Details
Frederick Douglass gained his freedom dressed in a sailor's uniform with borrowed sailor papers. Harriet Tubman also worked with Black sailors as illustrated the movie "Harriet." In fact, Black men--enslaved and free--made up 25% of men working in the U.S. ports and water in the 1820s. Sailing and whaling allowed these men a measure of freedom in traveling. Many were literate because of this freedom. And many helped folks escape.
Starring Vienna Carroll and the Folk, we'll discover the rich and engaging history of pre-Civil War Black sailors in this dynamic presentation which includes slides, storytelling, and song. Learn the hidden stories of these sailors, how they impacted history, and sing along to the sea shanties sprinkled throughout the presentation!
