Rural England in the late eighteenth century provided the bucolic backdrop for Jane Austen’s unforgettable novels. Jane was a keen observer of the customs of the rural folk of England. Life in the country had pleasures not easily found in the growing cities. In her short life, Jane would see England well on its way to becoming the first industrialized nation in the world, but she was herself always a woman of the countryside and the people of England’s rural counties and their folkways were treated with much affection.
