Western Classical music is closely tied to sacred music and therefore is linked directly with the church in Europe. However, there was a small number of Jewish composers who were active during this time and their music is a fascinating glimpse into the Jewish secular life of this period. We have prepared a program including music by Baroque composers Abraham Caceres and Salamone Rossi, as well as music relating to Jewish stories like that of Esther. As you listen to the sounds of the period instruments, try to imagine the music as it was hundreds of years ago. Envision the courage of these composers who did not try to hide their culture or faith; rather, they contributed to Jewish culture in the face of being treated as secnd-class citizens in 17th and 18th century Europe.

4 & 20 Strings is Long Island's premiere Baroque ensemble and consists of Ruston Ropac (soprano), Alexandra Calabro and Chelsea Winter (Baroque violins), Ryan Closs (plucked strings), and Kevin Lubin (viola da gamba). Our specialty lies in historic performance, meaning that the repertoire we play and the instruments we use derive directly from the musical culture of the Baroque era. We aim to educate the public not only on the music of this era but also of the lives of the composers who created them. All of our concerts include commentary on the pieces we play and we always allow room for questions and conversations with our audience members.
