If you're a word lover or ocean fanatic, then don't miss this fun lecture on the nautical origins of everyday words and phrases!  For example, did you know a "skyscraper" was originally the highest sail on a tall ship?  Or that "slush fund" used to refer to the extra fat a ship's cook used to stash and sell to candle makers? Learn a wealth of fun facts perfect for etymology lovers, the ocean-obsessed, or the conversationally curious!

Speaker Cynthia Barrett is an avid sailor and author of Three Sheets to the Wind: The Nautical Origins of Everyday Expressions. Her great grandfather, George Washington Barrett, was a whaler out of Cold Spring Harbor and sailed around Cape Horn three times. She lives in New York.

This is a hybrid program. The author will be live in person. You can join in person or on Zoom. Register below.
