Event Details

Join Professor Susan E. Cushman for a celebratory lecture on the life of Cicely Tyson, the legendary actress who broke both gender and racial barriers with her Emmy, Tony, and Oscar-nominated performances of strong African American women who prevailed against all odds. We'll discuss the milestones of her career, from her pivotal roles in films such as, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman (1974) and The Women of Brewster Place (1989) to her induction into the TV Hall of Fame, and the publication of her memoir Just As I Am (2021), released just days before her untimely passing.

Copies of The Women of Brewster Place (featuring the short story "Kiswana Browne," the inspiration for Cicely Tyson's character) and Just As I Am are available in the library or digitally via Overdrive. You can also watch The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman on Kanopy with your library card.

Susan E. Cushman is a Professor of English at Nassau Community College/SUNY where she teaches Writing, Literature, Women’s Studies, and Peace Studies. Susan organizes interfaith programs, teaches adult education classes, facilitates social justice ministry, and writes book reviews for Peace & Change and International Journal on World Peace.
